This rucksack contains everything needed to survive in the jungle. There are actually only a few essential items, the most critical being a machete. Also a lighter--even survival experts find it difficult to make fire in the jungle. A rain poncho and hammock are great to have and easily contained in a rucksack.

Most sources of water can be made drinkable. A few drops of Iodine or digging a hole near the water source to act as a filter. Employ a sample and wait test at measured intervals to check for safe fruit/nuts to eat. Grubs are a good source of protein and are often found in nuts.

A hammock covered by rain poncho and  mosquito netting is all that's needed for sleep. Have a fire whenever possible, using shavings and tinder to start, working slowly. Cook and eat as much as you can, taking what's left with you. Carve a sharp stick and keep it handy for fending off predators, especially at night.

Take boots off regularly to air your feet out as prevention against infection. Do not wear socks in the jungle! It's possible to survive in the jungle with only a machete. With no hammock, a bed can be constructed in a swamp bed, making an A-frame.

As Callie would attest, it is essential to make a shelter off the ground and away from ants! Learn to recognize plants with medicinal value. And those that work as repellants against insects, especially mosquitoes. Some provide natural toxins that will kill fish for easy procurement.

Large trees can also provide the base for good shelter. Dead reckoning using landscape objects will prevent a circuitous course. Callie did remember Jake telling Falcone and Niles to always look for a river. Pack signaling devices, such as flares, but anything that draws attention is good.
Talk the Talk

Special Forces operatives must be able to adapt quickly, quietly, and seamlessly into whateverenvironment they find themselves—whether on mission or by happenstance.  Just as Jake does, Hawke communicates in native languages to blend, infiltrate, or simply obtain clearer intelligence.

He found it necessary to develop a system of learning languages fast as he often travels to foreign countries on very short notice and has to be able to work intimately with officials—and others—who do not speak English.

Myke Hawke

For fun, Hawke translates a typical SpecOps phrase into a few of the languages he speaks.

The unique but highly effective method he created for learning languages is revealed in his book:
